Joining MojoTech by way of Wisconsin

It has been three weeks since I joined MojoTech, so it’s about time that I officially introduce myself.

I was born and raised in Wisconsin, so this is my first time living on the East Coast. My first impression of Providence has been overwhelmingly positive (setting aside the lack of air conditioning in my apartment). The city is able to feel vibrant and energetic yet quiet and peaceful. I am pleased to find that traffic on the East Coast is not in a perpetual state of gridlock and that milk is as cheap as it was in the Midwest. I am looking forward to exploring the city and taking a few trips around the area.

I like to get outside and relax with a variety of activities, including ultimate frisbee, jogging, and bouldering. I enjoy working with my hands and would like to spend more time building furniture if I can find a workspace. It has been a few years since I’ve really been into video games, but I’m sure that I could be talked into a game or two. I also like to cook and bake when I can find the time (and motivation) to do so.

As far as software is concerned, I started teaching myself after graduating from college with a degree in economics. This is my first professional software development position, but my other experiences include making some simple games using SDL (a C++ library), an attempt at fixing bugs in the WINE open source project, and a Node.js application that involved reimplementing the interface to an online RPG in order to reduce clicks and give myself a competitive advantage.

I came to MojoTech to learn and improve as a developer, and with so many fresh, modern technologies in use, I have had no shortage of opportunities to do so. Everybody has been happy to help with any problems or questions that I have had. I am excited to get up and running as quickly as possible and have no doubt that I am working at the right place with the right people.
